P4C (Philosophy for Children)
Update January 2023 - We are delighted that Oaklands has been awarded the SAPERE P4C Silver School Award! Our nursery was recognised for our sustained commitment and progress across the whole school. The Award Assessor commented that our application for the award was an ‘inspiring example of P4C in the Early Years’.
As an associate member of the Societas Trust, Oaklands Nursery is currently involved in a project called Philosophy for Children, otherwise known as P4C.
Philosophy for children is an approach to learning that we have adopted as a school, as evidenced based research has proven P4C can significantly and positively impact on children’s language and reasoning skills, as well as their personal, social and emotional development.. This approach encourages children to think with an open mind and a tolerance for others opinions. It fosters creativity and promotes a child’s capacity to debate, question and reflect.
Philosophy in practice means enquiry and an enquiry based curriculum leads to Caring, Collaborative, Creative and Critical thinking. These four C’s underpin our school’s philosophy for learning.
All staff have been trained to help Oaklands develop a Community of Enquiry within the setting. Key Workers facilitate weekly sessions during group time.
